How Does An Air Source Heat Pump work?

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are highly efficient heating systems that extract heat from the outdoor air and transfer it to provide heating indoors. Here’s a simplified explanation of how air heat pumps work:

Heat Absorption:

The process begins with the outdoor unit of the heat pump, which contains a fan and an evaporator coil. The fan draws in ambient air from the surroundings and directs it over the evaporator coil. The coil contains a refrigerant that has a low boiling point, allowing it to absorb heat from the outdoor air, even when temperatures are as low as -15°C (5°F).

Heat Transfer:

As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor air, it undergoes a phase change from a liquid state to a gas state. This gaseous refrigerant is then compressed by a compressor located inside the heat pump unit, raising its temperature and pressure.

Heat Distribution:

The hot, pressurized refrigerant gas passes through a condenser coil located inside the indoor unit of the heat pump. Here, the heat from the refrigerant is transferred to the indoor air through a heat exchanger. The indoor air, now warmed by the heat from the refrigerant, is distributed throughout the building via a system of ducts, radiators, or underfloor heating.

Refrigerant Reconversion:

After releasing its heat to the indoor air, the refrigerant, which has now cooled down, returns to a liquid state. It then flows back to the outdoor unit of the heat pump through an expansion valve, where it undergoes depressurization. This prepares the refrigerant to repeat the heat absorption process from the outdoor air, continuing the heating cycle.

It’s important to note that air heat pumps can also provide cooling during hot seasons by reversing the refrigerant flow. In cooling mode, the heat pump absorbs heat from indoor air and releases it outdoors, effectively cooling the indoor space.

The efficiency of heat pump systems is measured using a coefficient of performance (COP), which compares the amount of heat produced to the electrical energy consumed. Heat pumps typically have a COP greater than 1, meaning they can provide more heating energy output than the energy input they require.

By utilizing the freely available heat in the outdoor air, heat pumps offer a sustainable and energy-efficient solution for heating and cooling homes, offices, and other buildings. They provide a renewable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based heating systems, helping to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the environmental impact of heating. While saving you money on heating bills.

Benefits of Heat Pumps Systems

Heat pump systems are the way of the future. The produce less greenhouse gas emissions than any other natural gas, fossil fuels heating system. There are several benefits to making the change to a heat pump. It will help to lower your fossil fuels emission, lower your energy bills, improve your building energy rating all while providing you with ample hot water and a cosy home.

Government Support Scheme For A Heat Pump

Heat pumps are environmentally friendly, thermal energy heating systems that provide lower energy expenses and contribute to reduced carbon emissions. To fully leverage the benefits of a heat pump, it is important for your home to have proper insulation.

The SEAI grant encompasses various heat pump systems and provides financial assistance for the technical assessment. These grants are applicable to first-time installations of heat pump systems. Please note that grants are not provided for replacement heat pump systems if a heat pump was already installed in the home.
